The
Italian Garden is centred
around the formal pool, and started life as the family tennis court
until it was converted by Robert Stephenson Clarke in 1982.
The Lower Terrace was renovated in 1999 with financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and replanted following a design by award winner Robin Williams.

Today it is one
of the most popular rooms in the entire Garden and a real favourite
for many people. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy not only
the
summer colour around the pool
but also the
panoramic views stretching
across the South Park and lakes.
The lower terrace contains several unusual trees and shrubs including the Discaria discolour and the Italian pots are filled with geraniums and agapanthus for summer colour.
The more formal Italian atmosphere of the area is being enhanced with further golden box interfiled with various shades of pink pelargoniums.
Recently the Upper Terrace was transformed to create cool shade and subtle colours. The geometric beds are edged with myrtle and Magnolia ‘Kay Paris’ will be trained into standards. A new camellia walk has been added on the east side of the terraces to create a colourful entrance, to make an enclosure and provide additional protection from the wind.
