The
Long Dell was a former
quarry site, which provided stone for the construction of the small
stone walls around Borde Hill House.
Many large trees were lost here in the 1987 gales that led to considerable landscaping and stabilising. Recently the Dell has taken on a new and very focussed Sino-Himalayan theme.
The hardy chusan palms (Trachycarpus fortunei) miraculously escaped the falling trees and now form the Dell’s centrepiece. Originating from China they set the tone for the entire area.
All the plants recently planted are of considerable botanical interest and includes many Acers. Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens and Howick Estate have kindly donated most of these plants.
The azaleas on the north side of the Dell are evergreen and give a colourful Spring display.
