Sneak Peek – Behind the Scenes Garden Tour

Join Head Gardner, Andy Stevens, for an exclusive pre-bookable ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the Garden before Borde Hill opens to the public on 14th March, 11am-12noon.

The 1 hour guided tour will be a chance to experience the tranquillity of the Garden whilst closed for the winter and an opportunity to see early flowering crocuses and bulbs, camellias, magnolias and swathes of colourful hellebores. The tour will also offer a glimpse of what’s required to prepare the Garden for the busy season ahead.

Café Elvira, located outside of the main Garden entrance, will be open. The Gardener’s Retreat Café will be closed.

The Rose Garden, designed by Robin Williams and planted in 1996, contains the most valued and popular roses developed by David Austin, including Gertrude Jekyll, Winchester Cathedral and Graham Thomas. It also contains the most popular roses sold in the last 12 months in the UK including Olivia Rose Austin, Lady Emma Hamilton and Darcy Bussell.

‘Designing a Romantic Rose Border’ – Workshop with Juliet Sargeant

Well-known for her approachable presenting style, Juliet’s fun and informative workshops are packed with knowledge gleaned from 20 years of creating gardens and with tips that you don’t find in books.

‘Designing a Romantic Rose Border’ Workshop – Thursday 2 July, 10.30-3.30

Re-create the magic of the Borde Hill Garden with a romantic rose border of your own. Learn how to combine roses and herbaceous plants to create borders and arches which will flower from spring to autumn.

Now the traditional rose border has evolved to include companion planting with other flowering shrubs and flowers to extend the season of interest. But how do you also ensure the practical considerations for maintaining the roses?

In this illustrated talk and workshop, Juliet will explain how to choose the most reliable roses and combine them with suitable under-planting, to create borders that perform for months, with the classic romance of roses.

Subjects covered:
Different types of rose plants – choosing, buying and planting roses – perfect companion plants for a romantic rose border – the practicalities of maintaining a rose border

Who is the course for?
Beginners and garden enthusiasts are welcome.
This course for anyone who loves roses, but would like to extend their season of interest with romantic companion planting

By the end of the day you will:

  • understand how to combine rose plants for beautiful effect
  • understand how to extend the season of interest of your rose borders
  • know a good range of herbaceous plants to combine with and underplant your rose border
  • Be inspired by Borde Hill’s beautiful rose garden and learn to re-create its magic in your own home.
