Guided Magnolia Tour

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_single_image image=”13827″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Magnificent Magnolias – Guided Tour with Head of Horticulture, Harry Baldwin, 11am-12pm

Borde Hill is home to a truly impressive collection of magnolias. Some, collected by the Great Plant Collectors in the 1900s are now 90 years old and many have established so well that they have become ‘champion’ trees, and are either the tallest or have the largest girth in Britain and Ireland. In addition, it’s now four years since Gardiner’s Grove was planted with 48 new magnolia trees sourced by Jim Gardiner, Vice President of the Royal Horticultural Society, and all are now maturing beautifully.

On 29 March and 5 April, visitors have a unique opportunity to find out more about them with a free hour-long Guided Magnolia Tour led by Harry Baldwin, Borde Hill’s new and enthusiastic Head of Horticulture, who will highlight the most magnificent magnolias and bring to life the story of their origins. Harry, who was previously Taxonomist and Dendrologist of the Arboretum at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, will also explain how the future of Borde Hill’s historic tree and shrub collection will continue to develop into the 21st century.

Colonel Stephenson R. Clarke of Borde Hill sponsored the original plant hunters, and raised the famous Camellia “Donation” at the Garden in the 1930s. The collection also includes Magnolia sprengeri var. ‘Diva’, the Goddess magnolia, which came from a seed collection made by celebrated plant hunter EH Wilson. Other magnolias to discover include Magnolia campbellii, M campbellii var molicomata, M dawdsoniana and  Magnolia sargentiana var. robusta, introduced into cultivation in the UK in 1908.

Andrewjohn Stephenson Clarke, current family owner of Borde Hill says, “We are delighted to be sharing our impressive collection of magnolias with visitors who travel from near and far to enjoy our rare plants and trees, and we work hard to protect the collection for generations to come.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”13826″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Tickets

Open Air Opera: The Barber of Seville
Jul 23 @ 7:30 pm – 11:00 pm

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][vc_single_image image=”13801″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]Britain’s leading outdoor touring company, Opera Brava, present The Barber of Seville by Rossini, performed with a chamber ensemble against the magical backdrop of the Elizabethan Mansion House.

Description
Written in three weeks, Rossini’s masterpiece is one of the wittiest and most immediately appealing comic operas in the repertoire today and as fresh to the ear now as when it first burst upon it’s Italian audiences in 1816. On first hearing, the utter joy of one melodic masterpiece flowing into the next is thrilling to any audience. As the plot unfolds and is dramatically told through Rossini’s brilliant musical structure, it helps us to understand Barber’s special place in the history of opera.

Opera Brava’s new production brings together both national and international artists in an exciting and innovative period production, which will keep you enthralled and amused throughout the evening.  World class singing and tunes that you will go away humming.

Children’s Outdoor Theatre: Awful Auntie
Aug 12 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][vc_column_text]Awful Auntie by the UK’s most loved children’s writer, David Walliams, comes to Borde Hill Garden this summer with a thrilling open air theatre show staged by Heartbreak Productions.

The play tells the story of Stella Saxby, who is tormented by her awful Aunt Alberta and her giant owl. The dastardly duo will stop at nothing to take her inheritance from her.

Description:
The new playground at the Saxby Hall Orphanage is finally complete, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you. The orphanage was founded by Stella Saxby, who some of you may remember. Her parents were killed in a car crash in 1933, leaving her an orphan, all alone with her Awful Auntie. And when we say awful, we mean awful. Aunt Alberta and her best friend Wagner, a vicious Bavarian owl, tried everything they could to torment Stella into signing over the deed to Saxby Hall. But Stella, with the help of her friend Soot (the ghost of a chimney sweep, but friends come in all shapes and sizes, don’t they?) fought off Aunt Alberta, saved Saxby Hall, and gifted the beautiful Saxby Hall to be used as an orphanage.

Awful Auntie is a truly thrilling tale. Owls, ghosts, chases, escapes, motorcycle rides, and tiddlywinks all fill Stella’s days as she evades her menacing Aunt and saves the family home. So, please join us at the dedication of the new playground at Saxby Hall and hear how it all came about.

Make sure you bring a blanket or chair to sit on, weather-appropriate gear, and a picnic, as the tale could take some time to tell, and storytelling can be hungry work!

Performed on the South Lawn against the backdrop of the Elizabethan Mansion House, Heartbreak Productions’ version of this popular children’s book is suitable for children aged 7+.

Refreshments will be available throughout the performance.
Running time: 2 hours[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”13970″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Tickets: Adults: £15, Children: £10 (3-16 years old), Family (2 Adults + 2 Children): £45

Specialist Autumn Plant Fair
Sep 11 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]

The Plant Fairs Roadshow returns to Borde Hill Garden with a wide range of locally grown, garden-worthy and unusual plants to inspire keen gardeners.

The Plant Fairs Roadshow is a collective of specialist nurseries who will be setting up their stalls on the Azalea Ring to provide a mouth-watering range of interesting, rare and unusual plants for plant hungry gardeners. This is a great opportunity to buy direct from the growers and to get free advice from the resident ‘Plant Doctor’.

Late summer is a great time to visit the Garden, with roses, miscanthus, berberis, sedums, helenium and, of course, dahlias, all providing sumptuous colour well into autumn.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Nurseries to be confirmed[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”13680″ img_size=”large”][vc_btn title=”Booking soon” color=”primary”][vc_column_text]Tickets
