Camellia Heritage Tours at 11am and 3pm

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Herald the start of our new season by joining camellia enthusiast, Nick Schroder, on a guided tour of the camellia collection at Borde Hill Garden.

Trace the history of these wonderful plants, brought to Europe across the high seas from China by the tea merchants of the 18th and early 19th Centuries. Discover how Colonel Stephenson R. Clarke of Borde Hill sponsored the plant hunters, and how he raised the famous Camellia x williamsii ‘Donation’ here in the 1930’s. The actual plants, still thriving today, will bring the tour to life as you explore this historic garden.

Tickets available on the day: £3 per person, plus standard Garden admission

Drawing from his remarkable experience of working for the RHS for 28 years, Jim’s illustrated talk will identify a wide selection of shrubs that can be used in gardens of all sizes to provide interest throughout the seasons.

In addition, he will highlight a range of plants, including bulbs and herbaceous, that can be used in association with shrubs to give ‘added value’ to your planting.

Following the talk, enjoy a private tour of the Garden.

‘Plants for Free’ Workshop – Saturday 4 May, 10.30-3.00

In the first of her practical workshops, Juliet will demonstrate when and how to take successful cuttings to create new plants for nothing.

With a combination of theory, demonstrations and hands-on practice, by the end of the day, you will be able to take cuttings from a wide variety of plants.

This workshop aims at encouraging participants to observe garden plants, focusing on their growth through the year, looking at how they compete with each other, how to assess prospects for their longevity and their suitability for a variety of garden locations. Gardeners and designers can then use their experience and knowledge of plants to plan for the maximum interest. Students are encouraged to get down to see what is happening at ground level to really understand what is going on.
