Join Head Gardener, Andy Stevens for a guided tour of Borde Hill’s magnificent collection of early-flowering magnolias.
Borde Hill boasts one of the finest collections of magnolias in England, with many listed as ‘Champion’ trees. Its renowned collection includes over 80 large established magnolias plus over 100 planted in the last few years. The collection includes Magnolia sprengeri var. ‘Diva’, the Goddess magnolia, which came from a seed collection made by EH Wilson (Wilson 688). Trace the history of the wonderful trees and shrubs brought to Europe across the high seas from China by the tea merchants of the 18th and early 19th Centuries. Discover how Colonel Stephenson R. Clarke of Borde Hill sponsored the plant hunters, with the actual plants still thriving today, bringing the tour to life as you explore this historic garden.
See the Magnolia ‘Gardiner Grove’ come into bloom in 2020, planted two years ago with 48 specimen magnolia trees chosen by RHS Vice President Jim Gardiner for their scientific and educational interest.
After the tour, why not stop to enjoy lunch at the Gardeners’ Retreat Café before exploring the Garden at your leisure during the afternoon.
