The Artist’s Garden – Summer Exhibition
Aug 1 – Sep 30 all-day

Borde Hill Garden has been an inspiration for horticulturalists and artists for generations and this summer we are proud to continue this tradition by displaying the artistic response to the beauty of nature, countryside and gardens by 20 established and up-and-coming artists.

Visitors will be able to explore the historical Garden, renowned for its rare shrubs and champion trees, where they will discover approximately 40 affordable sculptures inspired by both flora and fauna, alongside Simon Gudgeon’s stunning bronze work, ‘Pelicans’, taking centre stage in the Italian Garden pool – kindly loaned to Borde Hill Garden from Sculpture by The Lakes, Dorset.

The exhibition also includes a variety of smaller works, with ceramics inside the Green Tree Gallery, printmaking in the Garden shop, and a selection of 20 paintings in the glasshouse by Kenneth McIntosh and Karina Goldman from Horsham Artists. Uniting the work is their common fascination with the beauty of nature, the countryside and the feelings they evoke within us. All works will be available for sale.

Borde Hill are grateful to the First Central Group for sponsoring the event. Jo McGowan, Chief People Officer, First Central Group says, “we’re delighted to continue our support of The Artist’s Garden. It’s such a wonderful opportunity for visitors to come and see a stunning collection of sculptures and paintings, many of whom are by local artists, all in the fabulous surroundings of Borde Hill Garden.”

Late summer is a great time to explore the Garden, with roses, miscanthus, berberis, sedums, helenium and dahlias, all providing sumptuous colour into autumn.

Artists include:

Alison Catchlove Jonathan Chiswell Jones Paul Harvey
Carole Andrews Karen Pearson Rosamund Fowler
Christine Baxter Karina Goldman Rosi Robinson
David Gisby Kenneth McIntosh Simon Gudgeon
Elizabeth Cooke Lesley Stepney Stuart Stockwell
Ellie Drake-Lee Liz Tiranti Tessa Wolfe Murray
Helen Solly Nicci Fairbank Will Spankie

Children’s Outdoor Theatre: Awful Auntie
Aug 12 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Children's Outdoor Theatre: Awful Auntie

Awful Auntie by the UK’s most loved children’s writer, David Walliams, comes to Borde Hill Garden this summer with a thrilling open air theatre show staged by Heartbreak Productions.

The play tells the story of Stella Saxby, who is tormented by her awful Aunt Alberta and her giant owl. The dastardly duo will stop at nothing to take her inheritance from her.

Description:
The new playground at the Saxby Hall Orphanage is finally complete, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you. The orphanage was founded by Stella Saxby, who some of you may remember. Her parents were killed in a car crash in 1933, leaving her an orphan, all alone with her Awful Auntie. And when we say awful, we mean awful. Aunt Alberta and her best friend Wagner, a vicious Bavarian owl, tried everything they could to torment Stella into signing over the deed to Saxby Hall. But Stella, with the help of her friend Soot (the ghost of a chimney sweep, but friends come in all shapes and sizes, don’t they?) fought off Aunt Alberta, saved Saxby Hall, and gifted the beautiful Saxby Hall to be used as an orphanage.

Awful Auntie is a truly thrilling tale. Owls, ghosts, chases, escapes, motorcycle rides, and tiddlywinks all fill Stella’s days as she evades her menacing Aunt and saves the family home. So, please join us at the dedication of the new playground at Saxby Hall and hear how it all came about.

Make sure you bring a blanket or chair to sit on, weather-appropriate gear, and a picnic, as the tale could take some time to tell, and storytelling can be hungry work!

Performed on the South Lawn against the backdrop of the Elizabethan Mansion House, Heartbreak Productions’ version of this popular children’s book is suitable for children aged 7+.

Refreshments will be available throughout the performance.
Running time: 2 hours

Tickets: Adults: £15, Children: £10 (3-16 years old), Family (2 Adults + 2 Children): £45

Includes entry to the Garden and Adventure Playground from 3.00pm (if arriving before 3.00pm, normal Garden admission charges apply). Access to the performance area from 5.00pm. Performance begins at 5.30pm and finishes at 7.30pm. There will be a 15 minute interval.

Yoga and Meditation Session – Turning Inwards
Sep 3 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Turning Inwards – Evening Yoga and Meditation Session with Calli Popham

As the season begins to turn and change pace, so do we. As the leaves turn on the trees nature reminds us of the beauty found in letting go. This practise will take place in the tranquillity of the Italian Garden after hours, and will offer an opportunity to drop in to yourself, with explorative movement encouraging a release of old patterns to make space for the endless potential we all hold.

We will close with a long, deep meditative rest to release and integrate, ready to come together to enjoy a freshly prepared mocktail and healthy snack, where guests can get guidance and inspiration from Calli.

Calli is a Senior Yoga Teacher, who teaches a fluid, playful and embodied yoga style,  focusing on bringing you home to yourself on every layer. She is passionate about yoga being accessible for everybody and believes that no one alignment fits all, encouraging students to enquire and move from a place of playful exploration.

Prior experience is not required; beginners welcome. Yoga mats will be provided. Please bring water for the session.

Photographs may be taken during this event and used for marketing purposes. If you do not wish to be included in the photographs or have any questions, please speak to a member of staff on arrival.

The Plant Fairs Roadshow returns to Borde Hill Garden with a fantastic range of interesting, affordable and unusual plants to inspire keen gardeners.

The Plant Fairs Roadshow is a collective of specialist nurseries who will be setting up their stalls on the Azalea Ring to provide a mouth-watering range of interesting, rare and unusual plants for plant hungry gardeners.  The Plant Fairs Roadshow’s very own Plant Doctor will be on hand to answer questions and help visitors find exactly the right plant for the right place too. And of course Borde Hill’s own gardening team will be available during the event to answer your questions, as well as giving free guided tours of the Garden at 11am and 2pm.

The Jay Robins Rose Garden, with its 750 plus David Austin English roses, continues to stop visitors in their tracks with its colour and fragrance, and contrasts well with the adjacent Blue Borders. These are where Symphyotrichum ‘Little Carlow’, S. ‘Monch’ and Aconitum carmichaelii Arendsii group all take centre stage at this time of year.
